Volumetric Black is a research art installation in speculative design and technology. The installation’s focus takes a critical gaze at the computational inadequacies that produce misrepresentations of visual blackness in digital media, sharpening its critique for the technological limitations of RGB spectrum to accurately produce black skin tones in digital spaces. Through the production of programmable digital tools and the implementation of consumer product hacking, Volumetric Black reimagines what the visual experience of viewing black bodies on televisual displays could be in the 21st century.
Coded #000000 [Black] is a java programmed image processor built in Processing. The code analyses video pixels retrieving the W3C's established seventeen colors of hexadecimal browns, magnifying the pixels by appending them within the frame of the video for closer comparison. The program is in its third working iteration currently analyzing a 26-minute video of prerecorded black and brown skin tones. This project is representative of a research series of interventionist works that aim to foster new conversations on the future of digital technology design and computation. Will the digital media future have diversity coded into its systems? Can we debug existing digital systems and platforms of their inherent and continuum of racial bias?
GOD IS MY TEAMMATE
God Is My Teammate is a interactive artwork consisting of four displays that features sixteen photograph busts of political characters from around the world. Each of the four displays has a global theme: Education, Social Politics, Business, and War. The face card pairs are comprised of ideologically aligned political characters digitally stitched together like the face cards in a standard deck of playing cards.
The Employee of the Month Campaign “Self-Service Customer-Service” system is the latest in innovative design and technology self-checkout platforms that streamlines all of the hassle of hiring live people to do the job patrons of your establishment should be doing for free. We guarantee that the EOTM Self-Service Customer-Service system will be the employee of the month, every month.**
**give or take a few hours offline annually for routine maintenance.
EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH [EOTM]
This iteration of the Employee of the Month Campaign is an interventionist performance project that utilizes guerrilla tactics of donning camouflaged–capitalism, rewarding the people for a hard day’s work with complimentary silkscreened t-shirts and posters at the end of their experience.
UNTITLED: MARIONETTE PERFORMANCE
A patronizing articulation that illustrates an ever growing dependence on technology. The performance stages a constructed binary between marionettes and their respective handlers, negotiating input–commands and output–actions. A choreographed sequence of movements that should ultimately result in reaching a designated location. However, input–commands are disaggregated amongst handlers, culminating in a shared experience of collective futility.
A digital drawing series spanning 18 years of documented observations and appropriated video fragments. Spliced, composited, and programmed to a distillation of close approximations.
Fractal Branch is a speculative VR illustration for the pseudo-neural activity during a brainstorming process. The contents of the brainstorming self-portrait uses arbitrary data points generated from my personal keyword search from google collected over a period of seven months. In this era of big data, I submit we will all have searchable self-portraits that will display a myriad of data points that convey both true and false identities of our digital-selves.
Uninvited Invited is a collaborative performance project, with artist Yuka Otani, that confronts the contract of social space and its production. This enactment divides the public–social space into two groups. Tier one, the alienating (chosen) audience made up of members from tier two, the alienated (general) audience. At its essence, this project explores the dual function of agency.
